The Poet Nobody Remembers, Front Row
You've come up from Wollman Rink onto the Mall, a wide pedestrian path in Central Park. Look up. Several rows of American elms line each side, and their branches form an arch overhead. Now look down the length of it: this path is a quarter of a mile long, and it is lined with the bronze writers who give the Literary Walk its name.
Picture who this place was built for. A wide path under a green ceiling is made for strolling: for walking side by side with strangers, seeing each other and being seen. And once a promenade like that exists, people want to put their heroes on it.
One of those heroes is a seated bronze man most visitors walk right past. His name is Fitz-Greene Halleck.
Halleck was a New York poet, and in his day he was a celebrity.
