Free previewStop 6 of Central Park Walking Tour: The Pond to Belvedere Castle
No Statue, Just One Word
You've climbed up from the Lake, and you're now in the quiet triangle of lawn and rock the city calls Strawberry Fields, just inside Central Park West at 72nd Street. Look down at the path for the round mosaic of black and white stones. In the middle is a single word: Imagine.
Just outside the park wall stands The Dakota, the apartment building where John Lennon, the former Beatle, lived with his wife, Yoko Ono. Lennon was murdered outside it in December 1980. In April 1981, the city named this patch of the park Strawberry Fields in his memory, after his song "Strawberry Fields Forever."
The problem was the patch itself. Back then it was an isolated median, a scrap of ground cut off between West Drive and two slip roads off 72nd Street. Not much of a place to remember anyone.
That's the opening. The rest plays at stop 6 of Central Park Walking Tour: The Pond to Belvedere Castle (3 min in all). Unlock the tour to hear it all, or try stop 1 free first.
