Walk from the old fort to the Bridge of Lions through a city where centuries of history linger in stone and soil.
St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited city of European origin in the continental United States, founded by the Spanish in 1565. It has changed flags several times since, Spanish, British, Spanish again, then American, and each change left buildings, burial grounds and stories behind. It also has a reputation for ghosts, and plenty of people come for those. Our walk starts at the Castillo de San Marcos, the coquina-stone fort on the bay that no enemy ever took by force, and ends at the Bridge of Lions. Along the way you stop at the Huguenot Cemetery outside the old city gate, where victims of the 1821 yellow fever epidemic were buried, and at Tolomato Cemetery, which passed from a mission village to the Menorcans who walked seventy miles north to find refuge here. You see the Cathedral Basilica, Flagler College, which began as Henry Flagler's Hotel Ponce de Leon, the Casa Monica, a hotel that kept changing its name, and the Spanish Military Hospital on Aviles Street. At every stop you hear the ghost story people repeat and then what the records say, which is usually the better story. The walk is 1.6 miles through the historic district and takes about 1 hour 3 minutes with the stories.
