The Hospital Street Ghosts Were Built Twice
You're on Aviles Street, the narrow brick lane just south of the plaza, standing outside number 3: the Spanish Military Hospital Museum. Look up and down the street itself for a moment. You're standing in the middle of a hospital. For most of this city's life, this lane wasn't Aviles Street at all. It was Hospital Street, and it kept that name until 1924.
Ghost tours call this one of the best-known haunts in St. Augustine. The stories cast it as a place where patients never quite left. That's the legend, and there's no record to settle it. The documented history is stranger.
During the Second Spanish Period, from 1784 to 1821, this street ran right between the two wings of a working military hospital. It was soldiers only. Only military men were treated here, and only military men worked on the staff.
