The Fever Year Outside the Gate
You're standing on Orange Street, just outside the old City Gate, those two weathered stone pillars that once marked the edge of Spanish St. Augustine. Across from them is a small walled-off patch of ground filled with old headstones. Look in at the graves. Many of them are older than the state of Florida.
The Huguenots were French Protestants, and as far as anyone knows, not one of them is buried here. The name stuck anyway. Its other name is plainer: the St. Augustine Public Burying Ground.
The real story starts in 1821. Before the Americans arrived, St. Augustine was a predominantly Catholic Spanish city, and its only burial ground, the Tolomato Cemetery, was reserved for Catholics. Then the American administration took over, and it saw the need for a formal Protestant burial ground. It chose this spot, just outside the gate.
