    Mallory Square

The Night the Ships Had to Leave

You're standing in Mallory Square, the brick plaza at the bottom of Wall Street, right on the water in Old Town. Face the open water. That's the Gulf of Mexico, and every evening of the year, this is where Key West turns around to watch the sun go into it. Now glance along the waterfront to the cruise ship pier. That pier is the other half of this story.

The Sunset Celebration starts here two hours before sundown, every single day. Hundreds of people drift in. Street performers set up, artists lay out their crafts, food carts start frying things. Then, at the moment the sun touches the horizon, the whole square goes quiet and looks west. It's one of the city's best-loved rituals, and nobody sells a ticket to it.

In 1984, that ritual nearly got blocked by a wall of steel. The city opened a cruise ship pier right here on Mallory Square. Big ships meant big money for an island town. But a ship tied up at the waterfront meant something else, too: a floating apartment building parked between the crowd and the sunset.

People pushed back, and hard. To plenty of locals, the evening gathering wasn't a tourist show. It was the island's living room. Opening a pier on top of it felt like letting someone park a truck in front of the television during the best part.

So Key West did something only Key West would do. The city passed an ordinance requiring cruise ships to leave port two hours before sunset. And to make the medicine go down, the ships could come back after dark without paying another docking fee. In other words, a city with a major port told some of the largest vessels on the sea to step aside, politely, so everyone could see the view.

That's the insight worth carrying with you down the rest of this walk. Key West has always lived off the water, and it has always argued about who gets the waterfront. The busy port and the quiet sunset share this square, and the rule settling that argument is about the light, not the money.

Before you go, look for the sculpture garden here on the square, with a tall monument called "The Wreckers" and dozens of bronze busts by the sculptor James Mastin. Wreckers were the men who salvaged cargo from ships that ran aground on the reefs offshore, and for a time they made this island rich. You'll meet some of these bronze faces again today, Hemingway and Truman among them.

And tonight, if you're still in town, come back. The ships will be gone. That's the law.

Walk east, turn right onto Wall Street, then right onto Front Street, about five minutes. The grand red-brick building waiting there almost didn't survive.

    Questions people ask

Can you walk around Key West?

Yes. Old Town is flat and compact. This route from Mallory Square to the Southernmost Point is 1.9 miles and takes about 69 minutes with the stories.

Is the Southernmost Point really the southernmost point of the US?

No. Key West is the southernmost city in the continental US, but the painted buoy the city put up in 1983 isn't the true southernmost point, even of Key West. Cuba is about 90 miles south.

Are there still cats at the Hemingway House?

Yes. Dozens of cats live on the grounds, many of them six-toed. The museum says they descend from Snow White, a six-toed cat a ship's captain gave Hemingway.

What are the stops on the Key West walk?

Mallory Square, the Old Customs House, Truman's Little White House, the Audubon House, Sloppy Joe's on Duval Street, the Hemingway House, the Key West Lighthouse and the Southernmost Point.

    Do I need the app?

No. After you unlock, the tour plays right here in your browser: keep the screen on and tap each stop. The free Stories app adds GPS auto-play, so each story starts by itself when you arrive, with your phone in your pocket, and works offline.

    Does it work offline?

In the app, yes: download the tour on Wi-Fi before you go. In the browser you need a signal, which is fine on most city streets; open the tour once before you leave.

    When can I start?

Any time. It is self-guided, so there are no departure times and no group to keep up with. Pause for coffee and pick up where you left off.

Can I give this tour as a gift?

Yes. Tap "Give it as a gift", type their email and a note, and pick the day it arrives (Christmas morning works). They open it in their phone's browser; you get the receipt.

    Can I get a refund?

Yes. If the tour did not work for you, email support@getstories.app within 7 days and we will refund it.

About this tour and its sources

You're standing on Mallory Square, a brick plaza on the Old Town waterfront of Key West. Face the water. That's the Gulf of Mexico, and right beside the square is the cruise ship port, where some of the biggest things afloat tie up next to one of the smallest towns in Florida.

Key West is an island about 4 miles long, at the very end of the road. Long before the cigar makers and the tourists, Native peoples lived in these Keys. Here is the question that runs under every stop: how does a speck of coral this far from everything keep pulling the whole country toward it? A president came for the winters. A bird painter came for the birds. A famous writer came, and the island has been selling him ever since.

The walk is about 2 miles and ends at the Southernmost Point, a spot so famous for being the end of the line that it hardly matters that it isn't the southernmost point of the continental United States. You'll see why when you get there.

Now, stay right where you are. Mallory Square is your first stop, and the city once passed an ordinance that sent the cruise ships out of port two hours before sunset. That's where we begin.
