Where the President Was, the White House Was
You're standing in the Truman Annex, the quiet corner of Old Town that used to be the Navy's base, in front of the wooden house everyone here calls the Little White House. Take a good look at it. It doesn't look like the place where the business of the free world got done. For about 175 days, it was.
The house went up in 1890 as the first officers' quarters on the naval station. It was a duplex, one side for the base commandant and one for the paymaster. Back then it sat right on the water. Later the Navy filled in land out front, put up another building, and the view was gone. Navy housing, in other words, with all the romance that implies.
Now the person.
