The Bar Where American Novels Drank
You're on Hollywood Boulevard, in front of Musso & Frank Grill, the oldest restaurant in Hollywood. Take in the front of the building: the glass brick windows, the flagstone wall, the recessed doorway, and the neon sign above it. All of those were cited when this block was put on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside, the waiters still wear red coats, as they have for decades.
The name on that sign tells a small fib. Musso & Frank opened in 1919, but not as Musso & Frank. A French immigrant named Firmin Toulet, who went by Frank, started it as Frank's François Café. Only in 1923, when he took on a partner named Joseph Musso, did it get the name you see. Four years later both men sold out, to Joseph Carissimi and John Mosso.
That's the opening. The rest plays at stop 7 of Hollywood Walk of Fame Walking Tour: Chinese Theatre to Hollywood and Vine (3 min in all). Unlock the tour to hear it all, or try stop 1 free first.
