The Hotel Named for a Legend
You're on East Houston Street, just across from Alamo Plaza, and the tall pale tower in front of you is the Emily Morgan Hotel. Look all the way up its thirteen stories to the pointed Neo-Gothic top. When it went up in 1924, nothing in San Antonio stood taller. It held that title for four years, until the Milam Building passed it in 1928.
It wasn't built as a hotel. Architect Ralph Cameron designed it as the Medical Arts Building, full of doctors' offices with a 50-bed hospital inside. The medical practices eventually moved out, and in 1976 it became plain office space. Then in 1984 it was gutted and rebuilt inside as a hotel, with the outside you're looking at kept intact. Today the hotel calls itself one of the most haunted places in San Antonio, and ghost tours tell of spirits lingering from the hospital years.
