San Antonio River Walk Tour: The Alamo to Main Plaza
Walk from the Alamo down to the river and into the heart of Spanish San Antonio.

Walk from the Alamo down to the river and into the heart of Spanish San Antonio.

Walk from the Alamo past storied hotels to the river and the heart of colonial San Antonio.
San Antonio began in 1718 as a Spanish mission and fort beside the river, and the city still grows out of that old core: the Alamo, the river, the plazas, and a cathedral whose congregation goes back to the 1730s. It is also a city with a lot of ghost stories, many of them set in its oldest hotels. Our walk starts at the Alamo, the mission church that was never finished, and ends at the Spanish Governor's Palace. It passes the Menger Hotel next door to the Alamo, the Emily Morgan Hotel and the real woman behind the Yellow Rose legend, the River Walk, which the city nearly paved over, and La Villita, a block of old homes saved during the Depression. At San Fernando Cathedral you hear how Jim Bowie was married there in 1831, and how Santa Anna raised a flag of no quarter from its tower five years later. You hear the ghost stories people tell on the River Walk and then what the history shows, which is often harder and more interesting. The walk is 1.9 miles, partly at river level, and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes with the stories.
