About Texas

Texas history in the form most people know it, from Spanish missions to the Alamo to the Republic, starts in San Antonio. Spain founded a mission and a fort beside the San Antonio River in 1718, and the city grew around them: plazas, a cathedral, old hotels and a river that the city once nearly paved over. Our Texas tour is the Haunted San Antonio Walking Tour, seven stops over 1.9 miles from the Alamo to the Spanish Governor's Palace. San Antonio's oldest buildings come with plenty of ghost stories, and the walk tells them, then tells what the history shows. You hear why the Alamo church was never finished, who kept the lights on at the Menger Hotel, the real woman behind the Yellow Rose legend at the Emily Morgan Hotel, how the River Walk was saved, how La Villita was rescued during the Depression, and how San Fernando Cathedral saw both Jim Bowie's wedding and Santa Anna's flag of no quarter. The walk takes about 1 hour 10 minutes with the stories, partly down at river level. It's a good one for the cooler hours of the day, and it ends a few minutes from Main Plaza.
