The House Across from Lucy's
You're still on 84th Street in Dyker Heights, and you've only crossed the road. The house at 1145 belongs to the Polizzotto family, and it sits directly across the street from Lucy Spata's, the house you just left. Stand on the sidewalk for a moment and look at the two of them facing each other.
One lit house is a gesture. According to one account of the tradition, it was only when the Polizzotto house joined in, among the very first families to take part, that the trend really picked up. A second house across the street is what made it look like a pattern.
And the Polizzottos went big. Their house became known for an enormous Santa Claus, about 15 feet tall. That's a basketball hoop and a half of Santa. Around him turned glowing holiday carousels.
Here's the part the photos don't show.
