A Wooden Giant Over Tiny Windows
You're on Fifth Avenue at the corner of 57th Street, outside Tiffany's flagship, the pink granite and limestone building locals simply call Tiffany's. Look just above the main entrance, on the second story. There's a man up there, nearly naked, holding a giant clock over his head. That's Atlas, and he's older than this building by almost ninety years.
Now drop your eyes to street level, to the display windows. Notice how small they are. There are only five: two here on Fifth Avenue and three around the corner on 57th Street. And that smallness is the whole story.
A jewelry store has a problem a department store doesn't. A diamond ring is tiny. Put it behind a big pane of glass and it disappears. For nearly forty years, the man who solved that problem here was a window designer named Gene Moore. His trick was to build small.
