The Lord's Pews Came Out
You're standing on North Broadway, the old Albany Post Road, in front of the Old Dutch Church. Look at the low stone walls, then up at the roof, flaring outward at the bottom like a bell. On top sits a little eight-sided wooden belfry, and above it, an iron weathervane. Find the two letters worked into that vane: VF. Those initials belong to the man who built this place.
He was Frederick Philipse, the first lord of Philipsburg Manor, the estate you just came from. Philipse owned land running from Spuyten Duyvil in the Bronx all the way up to the Croton River. A small Dutch community was already here when he arrived in 1683, with several dozen graves in the little cemetery on this hillside. His first wife, Margaret, died in 1691, and he soon remarried.
That's the opening. The rest plays at stop 3 of Sleepy Hollow: The Legend Walk (3 min in all). Unlock the tour to hear it all, or try stop 1 free first.
