The Easy Way Down, the Long Way Up

You've pulled into the Dark Hollow Falls Parking Area, at mile 50.7 on Skyline Drive. If you're the driver, park first, then take a look around at the lot itself. The cars, the people lacing boots, the families heading for the woods. This small lot feeds the most-traveled trail in all of Shenandoah National Park.

The reason is simple. Dark Hollow Falls is the closest waterfall to Skyline Drive. From here, the trail drops about three quarters of a mile down through the forest to a stream that tumbles 70 feet over rock. The whole walk is a loop of about 1.4 miles. In a park where so much of the ridge is something you see through a windshield, this is the quickest way to get out of the car and into the mountain itself.

That's the opening. The rest plays at stop 4 of Skyline Drive Through Shenandoah (2 min in all). Unlock the tour to hear it all, or try stop 1 free first.
